Fruits of our labors

The garden has been doing well, as you can read over at Wife's blog. She seems to be frustrated by how much zucchini and squash we're getting. She was never forced to help can green beans as a little child. (builds character doncha know) So she's a bit unhappy about having to freeze all this good free food.

As for me, I think it is a very fullfilling feeling to know that I'm eating and storing food that was the product of my labors and the sweat of my brow. All that toiling in the garden, willing plants to grow as if by my sheer will they would produce volumes of fruits and vegetables, is paying off.

Speaking of volumes of fruits, this will be the last year we plant any cantalope. After 2 years, 4 plants, and only 1 worthwhile cantalope per year, it's just not worth it anymore.

Here's some of the garden pickins.

Ah yes, you'll note that you only see 1 green bean there. That's because I haven't picked the rest, but really, there wont be many more. Those pesky rabbits kept eating the bean leaves. Bean leaves must be pretty tasty, because those rabbits wouldn't eat anything in the garden but those. Anyhow, I think only 3 plants survived.

In other food news AnnaMay swapped recipes with another girl at church. (She gave them the Zucchini bread recipe and some zucchini, she's determined to just get rid of them). Anyhow, we got this can of "herdez" out of the deal, and were told to put this on top of a roast in the crockpot and then shred the roast, and make mexican dishes out of it. This is the first time we ever shred a roast. Lemme just say, roasts were meant to be shredded. Why on earth haven't we done this before? Instead of choking down dry meat, we get this shredded, succulent meat that goes well wrapped in a tortilla. mmmmmmmm.....

I totally hear you about the canelope. When I was still at my parents', we tried watermelon. They turned out small, then we realized they were cantelope, and only one turned out very well and was over-ripe by the time we picked it. Certain things just aren't very easy to grow without the right conditions.

Last year we planted a garden, but this year as we were uncertain of our living situation, we stuck with a few potted tomatos, and a couple pots of lettuce. They're turning out okay and a few tomatos are getting to the ripe stage now. It is really nice to eat food that you've grown. I enjoy it a lot and would like to have a bigger garden someday.

By the way, if you ever BBQ hamburgers, you can take some zuchinni slices, baste them with a little olive oil or something, and grill them, and they go pretty well on the burgers, especially with some kind of cheese like monterey jack, or anything tasty and different.

Nice to see a couple of posts from you. Keep it up!
